Finding a tutor can be a stressful experience. Is it going to be difficult to work tutoring into a schedule filled with extracurricular activities? Will your child actually benefit from the experience? And how much is this going to cost? Having been a math tutor for so long, and having homeschooled my own daughter, I understand these questions and struggles. Every child is different, and every family has unique schedules.
My answer is that working with an online tutor can often be as convenient or better than in-person tutoring, since there are actually fewer overall costs and time commitments!
With online tutoring, you can work from anywhere with a stable internet connection, and there is no commute time required. The only time needed is for the session itself, rather than however long it would take to drive to an in-person tutor and back. This saves on gas costs for you, and allows you and your child more time for other commitments, while still promoting higher math grades.
In addition, my own schedule is incredibly flexible to work with, and I don't mind last-minute cancellations or rescheduling calls -- we all have things come up unexpectedly! To maximize this flexibility, I keep my student counts low, so that your child has the greatest opportunity for success and assistance. When you are not locked into a specific time or day — something other tutors tend to make their clients do — it allows you or your child to work around other commitments or vacations.
I do ask that all invoices are paid promptly — I can not work for free, since this is my business! However, I do not require a full month’s payment in advance. I charge on a session-to-session basis, saving you money and hassle if a session needs to be cancelled suddenly, with no chance to reschedule.
As for the tutoring session itself, I need the student to be honest, and to let me know if they are having difficulty — it doesn't help either them or me if they pretend to understand something. I also require them to do all homework I assign — math is not a spectator sport, and the homework helps solidify the concepts covered in a session.
Despite the fact that this seems to be an honor-based system of tutoring, I do not require you to sign a contract for any of this! Other tutors, both in-person and online, may require you to offer two days or more notice of a missed session, or to pay the month’s tuition within the first few days of that month. I understand how unpredictable life can be, and so have decided to make working with me as easy as possible.
Finding a tutor shouldn’t add to the stress you or your child are likely feeling due to not understanding math. Instead, it should be a stress-relieving experience! By working with me, you will have the peace of mind of knowing that your child is getting the assistance they require to succeed in school, and developing the ability to understand a science that much of society is built on.
